Defiant Jacob Zuma Claims Arrest Is Imminent

Former South African president and uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) leader Jacob Zuma has told supporters that he believes he could soon face arrest, but insists that the possibility of returning to prison does not frighten him.

Zuma made the remarks on Sunday, 1 November 2026, while addressing thousands of supporters at the MK Party’s final election rally at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu, north of Durban.

His comments came just days before South Africa’s local government elections scheduled for Wednesday, 4 November.

Addressing the crowd, the 84-year-old politician urged supporters not to become worried about reports suggesting that he could be arrested.

“Don’t worry about that, and don’t be scared. There is nothing,” Zuma reportedly told the gathering, referring to his previous imprisonment at Estcourt Correctional Centre in 2021.

However, he did not identify anyone allegedly planning to arrest him or provide specific details about the information he had received.

Neither the South African Police Service (SAPS) nor the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) had publicly confirmed any plans to arrest the former president.

His remarks have attracted attention because they come against the background of his previous imprisonment and ongoing legal battles.

Zuma’s appearance at the rally was also significant because it was his first major public engagement since spending approximately 11 days in hospital in Pietermaritzburg last month.

He was admitted after falling ill during an election campaign event and was discharged on 17 October 2026.

During Sunday’s address, Zuma sought to reassure supporters about his health, playing down concerns surrounding his recent hospitalisation.

He also used the opportunity to criticise the Government of National Unity and call for greater unity among black South Africans.

The MK Party leader urged voters to support his organisation in the upcoming local government elections, expressing confidence in its political ambitions.

Zuma’s previous imprisonment followed his failure to comply with a Constitutional Court order requiring him to appear before the State Capture Commission. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison in 2021.

His imprisonment triggered widespread unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

Meanwhile, he continues to face a long-running corruption case connected to the controversial arms deal, with the trial expected to begin in 2027.

For now, Zuma’s latest comments have added another development to the political atmosphere surrounding his party ahead of the local government elections.
