Chiefs Dogde A Bullet: Orlando Pirates Mentor Reveals Why Amakhosi Were Lucky To Lose By Just 2-1
Orlando Pirates Coach Ouaddou Questions Appollis Offside Decision After Dramatic Soweto Derby Victory
Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has questioned the decision to disallow Oswin Appollis’ late goal against Kaizer Chiefs while admitting that his team must become more clinical in front of goal despite securing a memorable Soweto Derby victory.
The Buccaneers defeated their arch-rivals 2-1 in the Betway Premiership clash at a sold-out FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October 2026. However, the result was accompanied by several talking points, including missed opportunities from both sides and the controversial decision to rule out Appollis’ late effort.
Speaking to journalists after the match, Ouaddou suggested that the discussion about missed chances should also include the goal that was disallowed.
“I think if we have to speak about the chances that we missed, we have to speak about the goal that we scored. I have to check, but I’m not sure it’s offside,” Ouaddou said.
The Pirates coach stopped short of making a definitive judgment, indicating that he wanted to review the incident before reaching a conclusion. Nevertheless, his comments highlighted the frustration surrounding a decision that could have added another goal to an already entertaining encounter.
Pirates started the match with Yanela Mbuthuma opening the scoring in the first half before Kaizer Chiefs responded through Pule Mmodi. The teams went into the break level at 1-1 after an intense opening period in which Amakhosi created several promising opportunities.
Tshepang Moremi eventually proved decisive, scoring in the 55th minute after Thapelo Mokobodi delivered the decisive pass during a quick attacking move. His finish restored Pirates’ lead and ultimately secured three valuable points for the Buccaneers.
Despite the victory, Ouaddou believes his players could have produced a more convincing scoreline had they converted more of their opportunities. The coach suggested that Pirates had enough chances to score as many as five goals, although he also acknowledged that Chiefs created opportunities of their own.
The Moroccan tactician has consistently emphasised the importance of efficiency in the final third, particularly with the demands of domestic and continental football increasing.
His concerns are understandable, as missed opportunities can quickly change the direction of important matches. Against a dangerous opponent such as Chiefs, failing to take chances can allow the opposition to regain confidence and apply pressure.
The disallowed Appollis goal added another layer to the post-match discussion, with the Pirates coach keen to examine the footage before commenting further on the officiating decision.
Ouaddou also acknowledged that Chiefs had opportunities to take control of the derby before half-time. Amakhosi created several dangerous openings but were unable to convert their dominance into a bigger advantage, allowing Pirates to regroup and make important tactical adjustments after the break.
The Pirates coach has stressed that his players must improve their finishing as the season progresses. With the CAF Champions League campaign approaching, he believes greater precision in front of goal will be essential if the Buccaneers are to compete successfully on multiple fronts.
The victory over Chiefs nevertheless represents an important achievement for Ouaddou and his players. Winning the Soweto Derby carries enormous significance for supporters, and the result strengthens Pirates’ confidence as they pursue further success in the Betway Premiership.
For Appollis, the disallowed goal will remain one of the major talking points from the encounter. However, the final decision stands unless the relevant football authorities take further action.
Ouaddou’s message is clear: while he is pleased with the victory, he wants Pirates to become more ruthless and ensure that missed chances and controversial decisions do not overshadow their performances.
As the Buccaneers prepare for their next challenge, their ability to turn scoring opportunities into goals could prove crucial to their ambitions this season.
