Bragging rights goes to Bucs who dethroned AmaKhosi during Soweto Derby

OVER 90 000 strong capacity crowd packed the Calasbash- FNB Stadium over the weekend to witness the Soweto Derby.

Amongst the fans was former Arsenal striker and French legend Thierry Henry, who came to witness this clash of the titans, having posed with captains, Pirates centre-back Nkosinathi Sibisi and Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, on a sunny Saturday, but later rain drops did dampen the heat at the end of the game.

Orlando Pirates won the game 2-1 but it seems there is questionable goal that was allowed, with fans in the stand calling for the VAR to be implemented soon.

Bucs opened the score in 24’ minutes when Thabo Moloisane deflected a Yanela Mbuthuma shot across Petersen.

AmaKhosi equalised six minutes later following Pirates’ goalkeeper Sipho Chaine having spilled a cross and Pule Mmodi tapped the loose ball.

Tshepang Moremi scored the winning goal in 55th minute to give Bucs the bragging rights on the day.

Victory means Pirates are second on the PSL log after nine games, one point behind Mamelodi Sundowns, who beat hapless Durban City 4-1 at the well maintained Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg.

The beauty of attending Soweto Derby in the company of fans, vuvuzelas blaring, with kids and parents singing, whistling and at times uttering French language- was fun, I’ve missed that experience in years.

Thanks to Suzuki SA, who are Bucs transport sponsor, for extending an invite.

However, there were several shots fired during the game, and its unclear what could have been the reason.

Stadium Management SA did not respond at the time of publishing.
