Big Change Coming To Ghana’s Money As Bank Of Ghana Announces New Cedi Notes

According to a report by Ghbase News on Monday November 2, 2026, Ghana is set to witness the introduction of newly redesigned cedi banknotes as the Bank of Ghana prepares to roll out notes equipped with enhanced security features on November 12, 2026.

The announcement was made by Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, who indicated that the new notes would form part of efforts to strengthen the security of the country’s currency.

The planned introduction is expected to attract considerable public attention, particularly among traders, business owners, financial institutions and ordinary Ghanaians who use the cedi in their daily transactions.

The new currency, officially known as the Ghana Cedi Heritage Series, is designed to improve protection against counterfeiting while making the banknotes more durable and suitable for the changing demands of the country’s economy.

According to the Governor, the decision to upgrade the currency follows more than two decades of circulation of the existing banknote designs.

During this period, technology has advanced and security standards have evolved, making it necessary for the central bank to modernise the notes.

The Heritage Series will retain the existing denominations, covering GH¢1, GH¢2, GH¢5, GH¢10, GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100 and GH¢200. The GH¢2 denomination is also expected to return as part of the upgraded series.

Beyond the security improvements, the redesigned notes will feature elements of Ghana’s history, culture and national identity.

The initiative will also provide an opportunity to recognise national heroes through the imagery and symbols incorporated into the currency.

Dr Asiama explained that the upgraded notes are intended to withstand prolonged circulation, reduce the risks associated with counterfeiting and support more efficient currency management.

Importantly, the introduction of the new banknotes does not mean that the existing cedi notes will immediately become invalid.

The Bank of Ghana has clarified that both the old and new series will circulate together, with the current notes retaining their status as legal tender.

This means Ghanaians do not need to rush to banks to exchange their existing money or withdraw cash simply because the new series is being introduced.

The Governor has also appealed to traders, businesses, financial institutions and the general public to develop better habits when handling banknotes.

He cautioned against practices such as crumpling, writing on, stapling, spraying and using money for decorative purposes, including money bouquets.

He explained that improper handling contributes to the deterioration of banknotes and increases the cost of replacing damaged currency.

He therefore urged Ghanaians to treat the preservation of the cedi as a shared national responsibility.

The Bank of Ghana is expected to provide further information on the implementation process to ensure that the public understands the changes and can comfortably adapt to the upgraded currency.

The initiative, which carries the theme “The Cedi, Our Future: Secure, Designed to Last,” represents the central bank’s effort to combine stronger currency protection with a renewed celebration of Ghana’s heritage.
