Bank Of Ghana To Release New Cedi Notes With Enhanced Security Features On 12Th November By Asiama

The Bank of Ghana is set to introduce a new series of cedi banknotes featuring enhanced security features, improved durability and modern designs that reflect the country’s heritage.Bank of Ghana Governor’s statement and reports by Modern Ghana, MyJoyOnline and Pulse Ghana.

Governor Dr Johnson Asiama has confirmed that the upgraded notes, known as the Heritage Series, will be rolled out in November. The series is themed “The Cedi, Our Future: Secure, Designed to Last.”

According to the Governor, the current banknotes have been in circulation for more than two decades. During that period, technology and security standards have advanced significantly, making an upgrade necessary to protect the currency against counterfeiting and to reduce the cost of replacing damaged notes.

The new notes will cover all existing denominations — GH¢1, GH¢2, GH¢5, GH¢10, GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100 and GH¢200. Designs will draw on Ghanaian cultural elements and honour national heroes, telling aspects of the country’s history while looking towards the future.

Dr Asiama has stressed that the introduction of the Heritage Series does not mean the existing notes will cease to be legal tender. The new banknotes will circulate alongside the current ones, and the public does not need to rush to exchange old notes.

The official launch is scheduled for early November at the Bank Square in Accra. The central bank is encouraging businesses, traders, financial institutions and the general public to handle banknotes carefully so they last longer.

The move forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise Ghana’s currency, strengthen public confidence and ensure the cedi remains secure and fit for purpose in a changing economy.
