Arsenal Legend Henry Makes Stunning Admission About Kaizer Chiefs Icon Doctor Khumalo
French football legend Thierry Henry has paid a major compliment to South African football icon Doctor Khumalo, revealing that the former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana midfielder was the local player he admired most during his playing days.
Henry made the revelation during his visit to South Africa for the highly anticipated Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October 2026.
Speaking to SuperSport TV, the former Arsenal striker reflected on the South African players who impressed him during his career. While mentioning legendary figures such as Phil Masinga, Mark Fish and Lucas Radebe, Henry singled out Khumalo for his playing ability.
The Frenchman explained that he did not have a favourite South African player among the current generation but remembered being particularly impressed by Khumalo when watching the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team.
“Doctor Khumalo was the player that I used to like with the way he played the game,” Henry said.
His comments represent a significant international acknowledgement for Khumalo, who remains one of the most celebrated figures in South African football.
Khumalo was an important member of the Bafana Bafana squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.
The former midfielder became known for his technical ability, creativity, vision and skill on the ball. His performances helped establish him as one of the defining players of South Africa’s golden football generation.
At club level, he enjoyed a successful career with Kaizer Chiefs, winning several honours and becoming a favourite among Amakhosi supporters.
Henry’s admiration is particularly noteworthy because he played against South Africa’s national team during his international career, giving him an opportunity to witness the quality of that generation first-hand.
Beyond his comments about Khumalo, Henry also spoke about his experience of the Soweto Derby.
The former Arsenal and France forward was impressed by the atmosphere at FNB Stadium, particularly the sight of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs supporters sharing the same stands.
He explained that such scenes were unusual compared with some of the major football rivalries he had experienced in Europe.
According to Henry, the ability of rival supporters to sit alongside one another without hostility was one of the features that made the South African derby special.
Henry’s visit also brings renewed attention to his friendship and mutual admiration with Springbok captain Siya Kolisi and lock Eben Etzebeth.
The football icon previously hosted Kolisi, Etzebeth and fellow Springbok Damian Willemse for dinner in London in October 2025. The gathering included a memorable exchange of sporting shirts.
Etzebeth openly described Henry as the footballer who inspired him to start watching soccer, while Kolisi has also publicly expressed his appreciation for the French legend.
The connections demonstrate how sporting admiration can cross national borders and bring together leading figures from different disciplines.
Henry’s latest visit has therefore provided another memorable moment for South African sport, with his recognition of Doctor Khumalo reminding football supporters of the lasting influence of the country’s celebrated 1996 generation.
