ADB Ghana Medicals Raises Alarm As 192 Kaneshie Residents Record Uncontrolled Blood Pressure
ADB Ghana Medicals has raised concerns over the growing threat of uncontrolled high blood pressure after 192 residents of Kaneshie were recorded with elevated blood pressure during a health screening exercise.
The findings have drawn attention to the need for increased public awareness, regular medical check-ups and early detection of hypertension, a condition that often develops without obvious symptoms.
The screening exercise highlighted the number of residents who may be living with high blood pressure without receiving the necessary medical attention. It has also renewed concerns about the burden of non-communicable diseases in Ghana and the importance of making preventive healthcare more accessible to communities.
Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, occurs when the force of blood against the walls of the arteries remains consistently elevated. Although some people may experience symptoms, many individuals with the condition do not notice any warning signs until serious health complications develop.
Uncontrolled hypertension can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney damage. Medical experts therefore encourage people to check their blood pressure regularly, even when they feel healthy.
The situation in Kaneshie reflects a wider public health challenge facing Ghana. Findings from the 2023 Ghana WHO STEPS survey showed that 21.7 per cent of adults aged between 18 and 69 had hypertension, while more than half of those living with the condition were unaware of their status.
Health professionals have repeatedly identified unhealthy diets, excessive salt consumption, physical inactivity, alcohol use and smoking as factors that can increase the risk of developing high blood pressure.
The findings from the Kaneshie screening have consequently highlighted the importance of community-based health programmes that allow residents to know their health status before complications arise.
People with elevated blood pressure are encouraged to seek medical assessment and follow professional advice on managing the condition. Those already receiving treatment should also continue taking prescribed medication and attend scheduled medical reviews.
The development serves as a reminder that regular screening and early intervention remain important in preventing complications associated with hypertension.
With 192 Kaneshie residents recording uncontrolled blood pressure, ADB Ghana Medicals has raised an important health concern that underscores the need for stronger public education and greater attention to blood pressure management in local communities.
