A Nigerian Ambassador to SA Sent Warning to SA “We Won’t Tolerate Unfair Treatment Against Nigerians

Nigerian politician Femi Fani-Kayode has reportedly issued a warning against the unfair treatment of Nigerians living in South Africa, insisting that Nigerian citizens deserve dignity, protection and respect regardless of where they reside.

In a statement attributed to him, Fani-Kayode emphasised that Nigeria is not a small or insignificant country that can remain silent while its citizens face discrimination, intimidation or other forms of injustice abroad.

He reportedly reminded South Africans of Nigeria’s historical contributions to their country’s struggle against apartheid, stressing that the longstanding relationship between the two African nations should encourage mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.

According to the attributed remarks, Nigeria has demonstrated solidarity with South Africa during difficult periods in its history. Consequently, Nigerians living and working in South Africa should not be subjected to unlawful treatment or hostility simply because of their nationality.

Fani-Kayode reportedly maintained that although every sovereign country has the right to enforce its immigration laws and address criminal activities, such responsibilities must be carried out within the boundaries of the law.

He stressed that allegations of illegal immigration or criminal conduct should never become an excuse for harassment, violence, discrimination or collective punishment against foreign nationals.

The statement particularly highlighted the importance of distinguishing between individuals who violate the law and innocent migrants who are legitimately pursuing employment, education, business opportunities and better living conditions.

He argued that criminal responsibility should be determined through lawful investigations and judicial procedures rather than public hostility or retaliatory actions against entire communities.

The Nigerian politician also reportedly emphasised that the country’s population, regional influence and historical relationship with South Africa make the welfare of its citizens abroad an important national concern.

His remarks reflect wider concerns about the treatment of African migrants in South Africa, where tensions surrounding immigration, employment and economic opportunities have periodically contributed to hostility toward foreign nationals.

Such tensions have repeatedly raised questions about the responsibilities of governments to protect migrants while maintaining public order and enforcing national laws.

The statement further underscored the importance of diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and South Africa in addressing grievances and preventing disagreements from escalating into confrontations between their citizens.

Both countries maintain significant political, economic and cultural relationships, making cooperation essential for regional stability and African unity.

Fani-Kayode’s reported position ultimately centres on the principle that wrongdoing cannot legitimately be confronted through further wrongdoing.

He maintained that Nigerians deserve fair treatment under the law and that any concerns involving immigration violations or criminal activities must be addressed through established legal channels.

His remarks serve as a reminder that respect for human rights, lawful enforcement and peaceful coexistence remain essential to maintaining constructive relations between Nigeria and South Africa.
