Nicco Movers Suspends Driver and Conductor Following Allegations of Misconduct Towards Female Passenger

Nicco Movers Limited has suspended two of its employees, a driver and a conductor, following allegations of inappropriate conduct towards a female passenger during a journey to Nairobi’s Central Business District. The company has also launched an internal investigation after a video detailing the alleged incident circulated widely on social media.

In a statement released on Thursday, July 16, the transport company confirmed that it had received information about the incident and was reviewing the claims, including allegations of indecent behaviour and threatening comments attributed to the driver.

Nicco Movers said it considered the matter serious and had taken immediate disciplinary action by temporarily removing the two employees from their duties while investigations continued.

The incident gained public attention after a TikTok user identified as @Thrifts_Empire shared her account of an allegedly disturbing experience while travelling in one of the company’s matatus.

According to her account, she was sitting in the front passenger seat beside the driver, with no other passenger occupying that section of the vehicle. She alleged that the driver repeatedly attempted to start a conversation with her, but she chose not to respond and instead put on her earphones.

She further claimed that as the vehicle approached Ngara, the driver covered his lap with a Maasai shuka before engaging in behaviour she considered inappropriate while driving. The passenger said she managed to record part of the incident secretly and confronted him when the vehicle encountered traffic before eventually leaving.

The woman also alleged that the driver made disturbing statements about women being killed and their bodies abandoned. She interpreted the remarks as threatening and expressed concern about her safety.

Additionally, she claimed that when she contacted the company’s management to report the incident, she felt that the response focused on blaming her rather than addressing her complaint.

The allegations have generated widespread public concern, with several people demanding accountability and stronger protection for passengers using public transport.

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris reportedly took an interest in the matter and wrote to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), requesting a comprehensive investigation.

Meanwhile, Nicco Movers’ decision to suspend the employees has been viewed as an initial response to the growing public pressure.

However, the allegations have not yet been independently established. The ongoing investigations are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The suspensions are precautionary measures and do not constitute proof of wrongdoing by either employee.
