Updated Log: Mamelodi Sundowns Thrash Durban City to Return to the Top of the League

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to the summit of the Betway Premiership after producing an impressive 4-1 victory over Durban City.

Masandawana delivered a strong performance to collect maximum points, with Thapelo Matuludi playing a starring role by scoring twice in the encounter.

Matuludi opened the scoring in the 34th minute to give Sundowns the advantage before finding the back of the net again in the 66th minute. His second goal strengthened the Brazilians’ control of the match and put them in a comfortable position.

Sundowns continued to push forward, with Iqraam Rayners adding a third goal in the 79th minute to further extend their lead.

Durban City managed to pull one back through Lwamba in the 86th minute, briefly reducing the deficit. However, any hopes of a comeback were quickly ended when van Wyk scored Sundowns’ fourth goal in stoppage time, sealing a convincing victory.

The result sees Sundowns move back to first place in the league standings, strengthening their position in the ongoing title race.

Beyond the three points, the victory also extended their remarkable unbeaten home record. Masandawana have now gone 34 consecutive matches without losing at home, underlining their dominance on familiar territory.

For Durban City, the heavy defeat will be a setback as they look to compete against the country’s top sides. They managed to find the net once but struggled to contain Sundowns’ attacking threat throughout the match.

Sundowns will take plenty of confidence from the performance, particularly with the team returning to the top of the standings. Their ability to score four goals while extending their impressive home record sends another strong message to their title rivals.
