Uhuru and Gachagua’s Planned Meeting Hits Fresh Hurdle as Kindiki Enters Mt Kenya Unity Talks
Efforts to bring former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua together are gaining momentum as Mt Kenya elders intensify consultations ahead of the 2027 General Election. However, the latest attempt has encountered another obstacle.
The reconciliation initiative reportedly suffered a setback after a meeting tentatively scheduled for Tuesday failed to happen when Uhuru became unavailable. The development has renewed questions about whether the two former political allies can overcome their differences and rebuild their relationship.
Kiama Kia Ma Council of Elders national patron Kung’u Muigai confirmed that preparations for a joint meeting were underway. He revealed that the elders also wanted Deputy President Kithure Kindiki included in the discussions, describing the proposed gathering as important.
Muigai said the former president would communicate a suitable date before the stakeholders bring the leaders together. He expressed optimism that the initiative could succeed, urging political players and residents to remain patient as consultations continue behind the scenes.
The latest reconciliation attempt is reportedly the fourth since 2022, when the two leaders found themselves supporting opposing presidential candidates. Uhuru backed Raila Odinga’s Azimio coalition, while Gachagua campaigned alongside William Ruto under Kenya Kwanza.
Their relationship deteriorated further after Gachagua became Deputy President, with political disagreements eventually escalating into a public fallout. Tensions intensified following the raid on Uhuru’s Northlands property, an incident that further complicated relations between the two political figures.
Gachagua has since publicly apologised to the Kenyatta family over the incidents, but Uhuru has largely maintained a reserved position. Their supporters have continued calling for reconciliation, arguing that political divisions could weaken the region’s influence nationally.
However, Gachagua recently dismissed claims that a specific meeting with Uhuru had been arranged. Speaking during a television interview, he maintained that he had not requested or scheduled an appointment, although he did not rule out seeking one if necessary.
The involvement of Kindiki has introduced another dimension to the discussions, particularly because the Deputy President has also expressed interest in Uhuru helping unite the Mt Kenya region. Elders believe bringing the three leaders together could help address competing political interests.
According to the elders, the proposed discussions will also examine leadership representation and the region’s political direction ahead of 2027. They want the influential figures to find common ground before December, warning that continued divisions could weaken Mt Kenya’s bargaining power.
