The victory secured Nigeria’s place in the semi-finals of the competition and continued their strong campaign in Morocco, with Azeezat Oduntan scoring the decisive goal from the penalty spot late in the encounter.

The Flamingos started the match with attacking intent as they looked to establish control from the opening stages. Nigeria created several promising opportunities but found Venezuela’s defence difficult to break down.

Tosin Rafiu was among the Nigerian players who threatened in attack, while Mary Dunstan and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi also tested the Venezuelan defence. Oluebube Umejiaku provided another attacking outlet as Nigeria continued to search for an early breakthrough.

Venezuela, however, remained competitive and showed that they could cause problems for the Nigerian defence. Ariana Ojeda and Migleydys Bolsegui both created opportunities as the South American side attempted to take the initiative.

The Flamingos were also forced to remain disciplined defensively as the two teams battled for control. Nigeria’s Favour Nkwocha received the first yellow card of the match in the 24th minute.

Despite the efforts from both teams, neither side could find the breakthrough before half-time, leaving the quarter-final goalless at the interval.

Nigeria resumed the second half determined to find a way past Venezuela’s organised defence. The Flamingos continued to push forward, but the South American side remained difficult to penetrate in the final third.

As the match entered its closing stages, Nigeria increased the pressure in search of the goal that would send them into the last four.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 89th minute when Nigeria were awarded a penalty. Captain Azeezat Oduntan stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to give the Flamingos a crucial 1-0 lead.

Venezuela could not find an equaliser in the remaining minutes as Nigeria defended their advantage to secure a hard-fought victory.

The result sends the Flamingos into the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, keeping their hopes of winning the tournament alive.

After her impressive display during Nigeria’s quarter-final victory, Favour Nkwocha was named Player of the Match.
