U-17 WWC: Black Maidens suffer elimination after defeat by Japan
Ghana’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup have ended following a 1-0 defeat to Japan in the quarter-finals.
The Black Maidens suffered the narrow loss at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat on Sunday, with Nanami Kurita scoring the decisive goal in the 54th minute.
Ghana coach Adarkwa made two changes to his starting line-up, bringing in Belinda Kpentey and Mavis Koah for the quarter-final encounter.
However, the Black Maidens struggled to find their rhythm in the opening half, managing just one attempt at goal as Japan dominated proceedings.
Despite their control, the Asian side were unable to break the deadlock before the interval.
Japan eventually found the breakthrough nine minutes into the second half when Kurita breached Ghana’s defence to put her side ahead.
Ghana attempted to respond and pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Adarkwa’s side could not find a way past the Japanese defence.
Japan held on to secure a 1-0 victory and book their place in the semi-finals, while Ghana’s campaign ended at the quarter-final stage.
Japan will now face fellow Asian side South Korea in the semi-finals as they continue their quest for the title.
