Two women were killed and five other people injured in a multi-vehicle collision on the N1 near Kranskop in Limpopo on Sunday, leading to the temporary closure of the northbound carriageway.
The crash occurred between the high accident area and the Modimolle off-ramp in the Waterberg district and involved four vehicles ― three sedans and an SUV.
In a media statement, Limpopo department of transport and community safety spokesperson Tshifhiwa Dali said preliminary reports indicated the accident involved two separate head-on collisions.
“According to preliminary reports, the accident was caused by a head-on collision between a Toyota 7-seater SUV and a Kia sedan. A second head-on collision then occurred as other vehicles attempted to avoid the first accident, involving a Kia Picanto and an Audi,” said Dali.
Two women were confirmed dead at the scene.
“Three people were seriously injured, two males and one female, while one male was critically injured and is awaiting airlifting by helicopter. One female also sustained minor injuries,” he said.
Following the collision, the N1 northbound was closed from the Kranskop Toll Plaza, with traffic being diverted through Modimolle town via the R33 to join the R101.
Dali said the accident scene remained active and was being managed by various stakeholders.
“Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, follow diversion signs, and expect delays in the area. Further updates will be provided as they become available,” he said.
