“Such a Blessing”: Soweto Derby Star Shares Joy Following Stellar Performance Against Chiefs

November 1, 2026 sportnow Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi has labelled his inaugural Soweto Derby as an extraordinary experience after playing a pivotal role in the Buccaneers’ triumph over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday. The 23-year-old was instrumental, providing assists for both Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi, leading the Buccaneers to a 2-1 victory in the Betway Premiership before a capacity crowd.

Mokobodi concluded an outstanding display by earning the Man of the Match title, bringing his total to four personal awards this season. Additionally, he has netted two goals and provided four assists across all competitions for Pirates.

Reflecting on the momentous occasion, Mokobodi conveyed his appreciation for being part of such an important match, while recognizing the intensity of facing their most significant rivals.

“It’s my first Soweto Derby, and I’m thankful for the chance to represent this club. It’s a true blessing to be on this journey with this team and to participate in such a monumental match,” he shared with Pirates TV.

“It’s not an easy match. It transcends just a game because it involves two rivals, two giants. We needed to show up and give our all because our goal was to secure the three points, which we ultimately achieved.

“We had to forge ahead. It wasn’t straightforward, particularly in the first half, but we strived hard to score an early goal, which we accomplished. They equalized, and we had to respond.

“To be honest, our performance in the first half wasn’t great, but we had to wear the badge with pride and step up, which we successfully did.”

Following the derby win, Pirates will shift their focus to the Carling Knockout, where they are set to host Sekhukhune United in a quarter-final showdown.

Mokobodi will be keen to bring his strong form into the cup match as the Buccaneers aim to keep their momentum and secure a spot in the semi-finals.
