South Africans React As MK Party MP Mngxitama Makes Controversial Remarks About Attacked Farmer

South Africa’s political tensions have intensified after uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) Member of Parliament Andile Mngxitama made controversial remarks about the brutal attack on farmer Donovan Marx, triggering widespread criticism and renewed debate about racial tensions and violence in the country.

The incident has attracted national attention following the horrific assault on Marx at his farm between Ventersdorp and Potchefstroom in North West Province on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

The 50-year-old farmer was reportedly shot, stabbed and tortured by armed attackers who also cut off both his ears. A farmworker was allegedly tied up during the incident but later managed to free himself and raise the alarm.

According to information released by the South African government, Marx remained in hospital following the attack, which was strongly condemned by Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp.

The minister described the incident as a senseless and barbaric act, expressing sympathy for the farmer, his family and the agricultural community.

However, the political controversy surrounding the attack intensified after Mngxitama responded to the incident on social media. In his comments, the MK Party MP appeared to welcome the violence, suggesting that the attackers’ actions carried a political message against white farmers.

Mngxitama wrote that the cutting of the farmer’s ears was symbolic, claiming it represented the refusal of so-called land thieves to listen. He concluded his message with the words, “No land, no peace.”

He also referred to historical violence against black South Africans, writing that black people had been killed and fed to pigs. His remarks immediately placed him at the centre of an increasingly heated public debate about the language used by political leaders when discussing violence.

The Freedom Front Plus strongly condemned the MP’s comments, describing them as unacceptable and arguing that a public representative should never appear to justify brutality against another person.

The party’s chief whip, Heloïse Denner, announced that the organisation would formally approach the South African Human Rights Commission and Parliament’s Ethics Committee over Mngxitama’s statements.

Denner argued that members of Parliament have constitutional responsibilities and must conduct themselves in a manner that respects the country’s laws and democratic principles. She also called on the MK Party to distance itself from the controversial remarks and take action against the MP.

Meanwhile, the police investigation into the attack has produced developments. North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams announced on October 31 that two suspects had been arrested in connection with the brutal assault.

The arrests followed an investigation involving police officers and members of the farming community.

The incident has consequently raised difficult questions about rural safety, political responsibility and the dangers of language that appears to celebrate violence.

Should an elected Member of Parliament face disciplinary action for making such remarks about a brutal attack, or should his comments be treated as political expression? Share your views in the comment section.
