‘She shaped my life’ – John Dumelo recalls film experience with Grace Nortey since 1991

Actor and politician John Dumelo has paid an emotional tribute to veteran Ghanaian actress Grace Naa Kwarley Nortey, remembering her as an inspiration who helped shape his early journey in the film industry.

Dumelo was among hundreds of mourners, family members and industry colleagues who gathered at the forecourt of the State House in Accra on Saturday, October 31, 2026, to bid farewell to the celebrated actress.

In a tribute shared on social media, the actor recalled his experience working with Nortey as a child on the 1991 Ghanaian film Baby Thief, describing her as a great woman whose influence stayed with him throughout his career.

He said their work on the production took them to several locations across the country, including Afienya, Mayra and Koforidua, where they travelled together to shoot the film.

“This morning I pay tribute to a great woman that shaped my life. From the first day I set foot on the film set of ‘Baby Thief’, she’s always been an inspiration,” he wrote.

“Rest in Peace Aunty Grace Nortey. Rest well Grandma. Love you,” he added.

Nortey died on August 26, 2026, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre at the age of 89.

Her final funeral rites attracted several prominent figures from Ghana’s entertainment industry, including veteran actress Grace Omaboe, popularly known as Maame Dokono, and members of the Ghana Actors Guild.

Dressed in white, mourners celebrated her life and contribution to Ghanaian film and television before she was laid to rest in a private burial ceremony.
