SA Pensioners Could Receive R3,000 Monthly as Civic Group Takes Grant Proposal to Parliament

South African pensioners could be in line for some financial relief after a civic group took their concerns to Parliament, calling for a R600 increase in the old-age grant.

The group, Math is not Mathing, wants the monthly old-age grant increased to R3,000, arguing that many elderly people are struggling to survive as the cost of living continues to rise.

Campaigner Geraldine Prinsloo challenged lawmakers to consider how pensioners manage their daily expenses with the money they currently receive, especially as the prices of food, electricity and other basic necessities continue to climb.

The proposal was submitted during parliamentary hearings on the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, giving the group an opportunity to highlight the financial challenges facing older South Africans.

For many elderly South Africans, the monthly grant is their only reliable source of income.

Beyond looking after themselves, some pensioners also help support unemployed family members and grandchildren, leaving them with even less money for their own needs.

With grocery bills, electricity costs and healthcare expenses eating into their limited income, making it through the month has become increasingly difficult for many older people.

The proposed R600 increase would bring the old-age grant to R3,000 per month, potentially offering some breathing room to pensioners who are struggling financially.

Although the proposal has not been approved, it has brought renewed attention to the financial difficulties experienced by South Africa’s elderly population.

The group wants lawmakers to take a closer look at whether the current grant is enough to provide pensioners with a dignified standard of living.

For many families, an elderly relative’s grant helps keep the household going. However, the question remains whether the current amount can stretch far enough in an economy where basic necessities continue to become more expensive.
