Relief in Adamawa as Two Suspected Ebola Cases Test Negative, NCDC Monitors 62 Contacts

By Emmanuel Kwada There is a sigh of relief in Adamawa State following confirmation by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) that two newly identified suspected cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) have tested negative after two rounds of laboratory testing.

The development has eased concerns over a possible spread of the disease in the North-East state, although health authorities say surveillance and monitoring activities remain ongoing. The NCDC disclosed that the two individuals were identified after the Adamawa State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre received an alert in the early hours of October 30, 2026, following reports of symptoms suggestive of Ebola. According to the agency, the individuals were immediately isolated, while samples were collected and subjected to laboratory investigations to determine the cause of their illnesses. Fortunately, both samples returned negative results after two rounds of testing, with the NCDC stressing that there is currently no laboratory-confirmed case of Ebola in Adamawa State. However, the agency disclosed that 62 contacts linked to Nigeria’s first confirmed Ebola case are being monitored as part of efforts to prevent further transmission. In a related development, six primary contacts who had been placed under quarantine are expected to leave the isolation centre on Sunday, November 1, after completing the mandatory 21-day monitoring period without developing symptoms associated with the disease. The six individuals reportedly include two domestic staff members of the index patient and a driver. The NCDC Incident Manager for Ebola, Dr Odianosen Ehiakhamen, confirmed the development, noting that the completion of the monitoring period without symptoms was an important step in the ongoing public health response. Meanwhile, the Director-General of the NCDC, Dr Jide Idris, commended the Adamawa State Commissioner for Health and the state’s public health response team for their prompt action in identifying and investigating the suspected cases. Idris reiterated that the only laboratory-confirmed Ebola case reported in Nigeria remains the index case initially identified in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who has since been evacuated to Switzerland for medical care. He assured Nigerians that the NCDC would continue working with the Adamawa State Government and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen surveillance, contact tracing and emergency response operations. The NCDC also urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could create unnecessary panic. While reassuring the public, the agency emphasised the importance of early detection and prompt medical attention, particularly for individuals who may have had relevant exposure to the virus. It advised anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, severe weakness, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding, especially following possible exposure, to seek immediate medical attention and disclose their travel or contact history to healthcare professionals. The agency further warned against self-medication, urging Nigerians to follow medical advice and obtain information only from credible public health authorities. Although the negative results in Adamawa represent encouraging news, health officials maintain that continued vigilance, effective surveillance and public cooperation remain essential to preventing any potential outbreak. The NCDC said it would continue monitoring the situation and provide verified updates as necessary, reaffirming its commitment to protecting public health through early detection, transparent communication and coordinated disease response. 📰 Get Latest News Updates Join our Telegram group and receive breaking and trending news updates directly on your phone.
