Pirates Extend Unbeaten Run With 2-1 Soweto Derby Win Over Chiefs
Orlando Pirates Claim Soweto Derby Bragging Rights as Moremi Sinks Chiefs and Miguel Sees Red
Orlando Pirates secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in an entertaining Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday, extending their unbeaten run in the Betway Premiership and strengthening their position in the title race.
Tshepang Moremi proved to be the difference-maker, scoring the decisive goal in the second half as the Buccaneers claimed all three points against their biggest rivals. The defeat, meanwhile, increases the pressure on Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz, whose team continues to struggle against Pirates in league competition.
The match got off to an intense start, with both sides looking to establish themselves in one of South African football’s biggest fixtures.
Pirates eventually broke the deadlock in the 24th minute through Yanela Mbuthuma. His attempt took an unfortunate deflection off Thabo Moloisane before looping beyond Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen and finding the back of the net.
However, the Buccaneers’ advantage lasted only six minutes. Chiefs capitalised on a goalkeeping error after Sipho Chaine failed to deal with a cross from Mfundo Vilakazi. Pule Mmodi reacted quickly, toe-poking the ball into the net to restore parity.
The two Soweto giants went into the half-time break level at 1-1, leaving everything to play for in the second period.
Pirates returned with renewed determination and regained the lead in the 55th minute. Moremi found the decisive breakthrough, finishing to put the Buccaneers 2-1 ahead and send their supporters into celebration.
The visitors appeared to have extended their advantage when Oswin Appollis found the net, but the effort was ruled out for offside. Moremi subsequently missed a promising opportunity to score his second goal, allowing Chiefs to remain within touching distance.
Amakhosi continued fighting for an equaliser, but their hopes of salvaging something from the derby suffered another setback in the 90th minute when Inacio Miguel received his second yellow card and was sent off.
The red card left Chiefs with ten men during the closing stages, making their task even more difficult as Pirates looked to protect their advantage.
The final whistle confirmed another important derby victory for the Buccaneers, who maintained their unbeaten league record and continued their impressive defensive form. Having conceded just two goals throughout the campaign, Pirates are demonstrating the consistency required to remain serious title contenders.
For Chiefs, however, the defeat represents another disappointing chapter in their recent league meetings with their Soweto rivals. They have now gone six consecutive league matches without beating Pirates, a statistic that will concern the Amakhosi faithful.
Da Cruz had received public backing from the club’s board and football management earlier in the week, but losing another Soweto Derby will inevitably intensify scrutiny of his leadership and the team’s progress.
While Pirates celebrate another significant victory and strengthen their title ambitions, Chiefs are left with difficult questions to answer as they attempt to turn their league fortunes around.
