Orlando Pirates End Kaizer Chiefs’ Unbeaten Run With 2-1 Soweto Derby Victory

Orlando Pirates secured a memorable 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the first Soweto Derby of the season on Saturday afternoon, ending their rivals’ unbeaten record in the Betway Premiership and moving to the top of the league standings.

The highly anticipated encounter took place at FNB Stadium, where thousands of supporters gathered to witness another chapter in South African football’s biggest rivalry. Both teams entered the match with plenty at stake, but it was the Buccaneers who eventually emerged victorious after producing a determined performance.

Kaizer Chiefs approached the derby hoping to extend their unbeaten start to the league campaign. Under head coach Fernando da Cruz, Amakhosi had been working to establish consistency and maintain their position among the leading teams. However, their hopes of preserving that record were dealt a major blow by their Soweto rivals.

Orlando Pirates made their attacking intentions clear and found the breakthrough through striker Yanela Mbuthuma, who gave the Buccaneers an important advantage. His goal put pressure on Chiefs, who were forced to increase their attacking efforts in search of an equaliser.

The Buccaneers continued to threaten going forward, with Tshepang Moremi also getting his name on the scoresheet to strengthen Pirates’ position. Chiefs managed to find a response and kept the contest competitive, but they ultimately failed to recover from the setback.

The 2-1 result handed Pirates all three points and brought an end to Chiefs’ unbeaten run in the competition.

For Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the victory represents an important achievement, considering the significance of the Soweto Derby. Beyond the bragging rights, the result also strengthens the club’s ambitions of challenging for the Betway Premiership title.

Pirates moved to the top of the standings following the victory, while Chiefs must now regroup under Da Cruz and prepare for their next assignment. The defeat will serve as a setback for Amakhosi after their encouraging beginning to the season.
