Onyema Commends Fidelity Bank on $400m Eurobond Repayment

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, Dr Allen Onyema, has commended Fidelity Bank Plc for successfully repaying its $400 million Eurobond at maturity, describing the achievement as a demonstration of financial strength, institutional discipline and effective corporate leadership.

Onyema, in a congratulatory message issued on behalf of the Board, Management and staff of Air Peace Limited, praised the bank for meeting its financial obligations throughout the five-year tenure of the Eurobond, particularly its ability to settle the debt entirely from internally generated liquidity.

He said the successful repayment reflected the bank’s strong financial position, prudent resource management and commitment to maintaining its credibility in the domestic and international financial markets.

The Air Peace chairman attributed the achievement largely to the strategic leadership of Fidelity Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, noting that her stewardship had continued to strengthen the institution’s financial standing and reputation within Nigeria’s banking industry.

He also congratulated the bank on completing its recapitalisation exercise ahead of the deadline stipulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), describing the twin achievements as evidence of sound corporate governance, strategic planning and sustainable financial management.

Onyema said the bank’s ability to fulfil its Eurobond obligations without relying on external funding was particularly commendable, given the financial and economic pressures facing businesses and institutions.

He further highlighted the critical relationship between the banking and aviation industries, stressing that financially resilient institutions were essential to supporting capital-intensive sectors such as aviation.

According to him, access to sustainable financing remains crucial to airline operations, fleet expansion, aircraft acquisition, infrastructure development and the long-term growth of Nigeria’s aviation industry.

He noted that indigenous airlines and other businesses require strong financial institutions capable of providing the capital and financial support needed to compete effectively in an increasingly challenging global business environment.

Onyema added that stronger partnerships between Nigerian banks and indigenous enterprises would contribute significantly to economic competitiveness, private-sector development and the country’s broader economic aspirations.

He congratulated Onyeali-Ikpe, the bank’s Board, Management and entire workforce on the milestone, expressing confidence in the institution’s ability to achieve greater accomplishments in the years ahead.

The Air Peace chairman also reaffirmed the airline’s goodwill towards Fidelity Bank, wishing the financial institution continued growth, stability and success in Nigeria’s banking industry.
