Obtained Through Lies: Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu Fights Back Against SAPS Home Raid
Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has challenged the legality of a search warrant used by police to raid properties linked to him, alleging that investigators obtained the court authorisation through misleading information.
The latest development has brought renewed attention to the investigations surrounding Mchunu, who is currently facing scrutiny over allegations linked to corruption and interference in police investigations.
According to court papers reported by The Citizen on Sunday, 1 November 2026, Mchunu has approached the Johannesburg High Court seeking to have the search warrant issued in September set aside.
He reportedly argues that the affidavit submitted in support of the warrant failed to establish reasonable grounds for suspecting that a crime had been committed.
Mchunu further alleges that the senior police officer who applied for the warrant misled the judge by presenting information that did not provide a proper legal basis for the search.
The warrant reportedly authorised police officers to search four properties associated with the suspended minister. During the operation, investigators seized electronic devices believed to be potentially relevant to an ongoing criminal investigation.
Police previously explained that the search-and-seizure operation formed part of investigations into allegations including fraud and defeating the ends of justice.
Mchunu’s legal challenge raises questions about whether investigators followed the correct procedures when obtaining permission to search the properties and seize electronic devices.
The controversy comes amid wider investigations into allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
Mchunu’s name became central to the controversy after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made serious allegations concerning the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team.
Mkhwanazi alleged that the decision interfered with investigations into politically motivated killings. Mchunu has denied wrongdoing.
The allegations subsequently contributed to the establishment of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is examining claims of corruption and political interference within law enforcement institutions.
Meanwhile, Mchunu’s latest court application represents another legal challenge involving police searches of properties connected to him.
The court will ultimately have to consider the arguments presented before determining whether the disputed search warrant should be declared invalid.
For now, the legal battle adds another significant development to the ongoing controversy surrounding the suspended minister.
