“Obrigado” reborn – Mfundo Vilakazi admits he’s adjusted his game – and the stats prove it

Kaizer Chiefs academy graduate Mfundo Vilakazi has acknowledged that he has adjusted his style of play, toning down the flashy skills that once drew criticism — and he credits coach Fernando Da Cruz for guiding the shift. The Soweto-born talent, affectionately known as “Obrigado,” was often accused of prioritising showboating over team effectiveness, but he has matured into a key contributor this season.

“When the coach arrived, he told me that he knows how I play,” Vilakazi explained. “But sometimes if it’s not necessary for me to do those things, I shouldn’t. He didn’t say I must never do it — but I’ve told myself that the team comes first. If we’re not getting results, I can’t be busy juggling the ball. Maybe when we do get results.”

The numbers show the difference. Across eight matches and six starts, Vilakazi has averaged 7.37 on FotMob and 7.36 on Sofascore. He found the net in the 3–2 win over Siwelele FC and set up a goal in the 3–1 victory against Kruger United. He has registered 27 shots, nine on target, completed 62.5% of his dribbles, and boasts an impressive 87.5% passing accuracy.

Defensively, his work rate stands out: 24 duels won at 57.1%, 17 ball recoveries, four tackles, and one interception — with zero cards and no fouls committed. Vilakazi is proving he can thrill and deliver.
