Move out – Cardi B urges New Yorkers planning families to leave the city after Ghanaian teen killing
According to a report by Ghanaweb on Sunday, Nov 1, 2026, American rapper Cardi B has added her voice to the growing reaction over the killing of 15-year-old Ghanaian student Javits Frimpong, saying his death confirms her decision never to raise a child in parts of New York.
Frimpong was shot on his way to school in the Bronx on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The case has drawn strong reaction from Ghanaians at home and abroad.
Cardi B, who grew up in the Bronx, said the tragedy is why she would not raise children in the Bronx, Harlem or Washington Heights, or send them to a New York public school. She described life in such neighbourhoods as a daily struggle for survival.
She also questioned the mindset of the teenagers sought over the shooting, asking how anyone could wake up and decide to take the life of someone who had done them no wrong. Turning to parents in the city, she urged those planning families to relocate, saying young people there had become aggressive and, in her words, “so nasty.”
Javits moved from Ghana to the United States a year before his death to join his father, Thomas Frimpong, a 60-year-old taxi driver. He was shot once shortly before 9:30am near East 171st Street in the Claremont area of the Bronx and died in hospital. He was a student at DreamYard Preparatory School.
His father told CBS News New York that the school principal had called him days earlier about a fight involving his son and two other boys, who were subsequently suspended. Javits had also told him he was being bullied at lunch.
Police are looking for three teenage boys aged between 16 and 18, last seen in all-black clothing and blue surgical masks. No arrests had been reported at the time of publication. Authorities have not said what led to the shooting or whether bullying played any part.
