Man Who Entered Gauteng With Gun & Shot 7 South Africans Dead Has Been Found Guilty And Jailed

A 29-year-old man, Halalisani Mchunu, has received an effective 25-year prison sentence for his involvement in a series of deadly taxi-related shootings that claimed seven lives and left several others injured across Gauteng, South Africa.

The Gauteng Division of the High Court in Johannesburg handed down the sentence after Mchunu admitted responsibility for seven murders, 17 attempted murders, possession of prohibited firearms, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Although the combined sentences imposed by the court amounted to 300 years of imprisonment, the court ordered them to run concurrently, meaning Mchunu will serve an effective prison term of 25 years.

The violent incidents occurred between July 2023 and August 2024, affecting several communities, including Lehae, Eikenhof, Midrand, Johannesburg Central, and Kagiso.

One of the deadliest attacks happened on 12 July 2023 along the R554 in Eikenhof, where four taxi patrollers were ambushed and fatally shot. Another patroller sustained injuries during the attack.

Earlier that same day, three individuals were wounded when gunmen opened fire at the Lehae Taxi Rank, further escalating tensions surrounding taxi operations in the province.

The violence continued on 20 August 2024 when another shooting occurred in Midrand, leaving four people injured.

Two days later, taxi patroller Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mcwabe was murdered at Noord Taxi Rank in Johannesburg.

On the same date, off-duty police officer Nthabiseng Bridget Mosidi and taxi owner Mthokozisi Nkosinathi Ndlela were shot and killed outside Kagiso Police Station.

Investigators subsequently established connections between Mchunu and the shootings through cellphone records and forensic evidence.

Ballistic examinations also linked an AK-47-type rifle recovered during the investigation to the shooting incidents.

A significant breakthrough occurred on 30 August 2024 when police conducted an operation at a property in Toekomsrus, Randfontein.

During the raid, officers recovered two AK-47-type rifles and 138 rounds of ammunition, strengthening the criminal case against Mchunu.

Senior State Advocate Vuyolwethu Mbaduli emphasized the devastating consequences of the killings, particularly for families who lost loved ones.

Several children were left without parental care and financial support following the murders.

Mchunu ultimately entered a plea-and-sentence agreement under Section 105A of South Africa’s Criminal Procedure Act.

The case highlights the devastating human consequences of taxi-related violence and the lasting suffering experienced by victims’ families and affected communities.
