Kofi Bentil Criticises Government Over Unequal Response To Deaths Of Ghanaians

IMANI Africa Vice President Kofi Bentil has criticised what he describes as the government’s unequal response to the deaths of Ghanaian citizens, questioning why some incidents receive immediate official attention while others appear to attract little concern.

According to a report by TV3 Ghana on October 31, 2026, Mr Bentil raised the issue following the reported deaths of three Ghanaians in an incident at Narawa Mines. He expressed concern over what he considers an inconsistent approach by the government when responding to tragedies involving citizens.

Mr Bentil reportedly pointed out that the government issued an official statement after a 15-year-old Ghanaian boy was killed outside the country. However, he questioned why similar attention had not been given to the three Ghanaians who were reportedly killed within Ghana.

He argued that the lives of Ghanaian citizens should receive equal consideration, regardless of where they lose their lives. According to his position, the government should demonstrate the same level of concern when citizens die abroad as it does when fatalities occur within the country’s borders.

His comments have particularly drawn attention to the welfare of people working in Ghana’s mining industry, where concerns about workplace safety and the protection of surrounding communities remain important issues.

The reported incident at Narawa Mines has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the deaths, as well as the measures being taken to protect workers and residents in mining communities. There have been growing calls for the relevant authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly, establish what happened and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable.

Bentil’s intervention has also reopened discussions about the government’s responsibility to protect citizens and respond appropriately whenever lives are lost. His argument centres on the need for consistency in official communication, investigations and government action, particularly when incidents involve ordinary Ghanaians.

The concerns also place pressure on relevant state institutions to demonstrate that the safety and welfare of citizens remain a priority, irrespective of their location or social standing.

As discussions surrounding the Narawa Mines incident continue, attention is expected to remain on the government’s response and whether authorities will provide further explanations regarding the reported deaths.

For Mr Bentil, the central issue is the need for equal recognition and concern whenever a Ghanaian life is lost, whether within the country or beyond its borders.
