Gunmen storm Plateau military checkpoint, kill soldier, steal rifle
Gunmen have killed a soldier and escaped with his rifle after attacking a military checkpoint in Plateau State, raising fresh security concerns in the troubled area. The attack occurred at about 8pm on Saturday at Sopp Checkpoint in Ungwan Boka, Sopp community, Riyom Local Government Area, where troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) were deployed.
The attackers reportedly opened fire on the troops from different directions, triggering an exchange of gunfire before they fled into nearby bushes. Daily Sun reported that one soldier was killed during the incident, while the gunmen carted away his rifle. Confirming the attack, OPEP spokesman, Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, described it as a deliberate and unprovoked assault on the troops. He, however, said security personnel had restored normalcy in the area and launched a pursuit of the attackers. “It was a deliberate and unprovoked attack on troops at Sopp Check Point, Ungwan Boka in Riyom Local Government Area,” Oteh said. “Troops have restored normalcy in the area and are maintaining aggressive pursuit of the perpetrators in order to apprehend them and recover the carted-away weapons.” He added that the situation remained under control, while troops had heightened vigilance to prevent further security breaches and reassure residents of their safety. “We are aggressively pursuing the perpetrators and recover the stolen weapons,” he said. The military spokesman urged residents to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, while appealing to members of the public to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in tracking down the attackers. 📰 Get Latest News Updates Join our Telegram group and receive breaking and trending news updates directly on your phone.
