Good News for Foreign Nationals in South Africa
Foreign nationals seeking asylum in South Africa are expected to benefit from a new online registration system scheduled to be introduced by the Department of Home Affairs on 10 November 2026.
The new model will allow individuals seeking refugee protection to register their intention to apply for asylum online before attending an appointment at a designated Refugee Reception Office (RRO).
Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi, who chairs the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration, announced the planned introduction as the government works to improve the country’s asylum application process following a Constitutional Court ruling.
Under the proposed system, applicants will be able to submit their intention to seek asylum through an online platform. They will subsequently receive a receipt containing their personal information, a reference number and an appointment at a Refugee Reception Office.
The initiative is intended to address challenges within the existing registration process and make it easier for people seeking protection to enter the formal asylum system without unnecessary delays.
Biometric registration will also be compulsory, allowing authorities to verify applicants’ identities and strengthen the management of asylum applications.
Importantly, people who do not have access to the internet or struggle to use the online platform will not be left behind. Assisted registration will be available at Refugee Reception Offices. Assistance will also be provided, upon request, to individuals held in police or immigration detention.
The development comes amid continued national debate over immigration, border security and the treatment of foreign nationals in South Africa.
However, the new system does not mean that everyone who registers automatically receives refugee status. Applicants must still undergo the relevant assessment and legal procedures before their asylum claims can be approved.
The online asylum registration model is scheduled to begin on 10 November 2026, marking a planned change in how people seeking refugee protection enter South Africa’s asylum application process.
