George Ruto’s Mood driver Lenny confirms first-ever football match for Nairobi nganya drivers
Nairobi’s vibrant matatu culture is preparing for an unusual showdown, with drivers from Embakasi’s Route 33 set to face their counterparts from Kayole Junction’s Route 39 in a football match scheduled for November 8, 2026.
The planned fixture will take the rivalry between the two celebrated nganya routes beyond their customised vehicles, music, dance and street displays, giving their drivers an opportunity to compete on the football pitch.
George Ruto’s Mood driver Lenny confirmed the plans in a TikTok video on Saturday, October 31, 2026, in which he appeared alongside Alkaline, a popular nganya driver associated with the Junction route.
Lenny revealed that Alkaline would be responsible for organising the Kayole Junction team, while he would help put together the Embakasi side. He admitted that the Route 33 squad was yet to take shape, despite having several drivers who could feature in the contest.
He also named some of the drivers expected to participate, disclosing that Driver Sule would wear the number 7 shirt while he had reserved number 11 for himself.
“Right now, I am here with Alkaline, one of the popular nganya drivers from Junction Route. He will be in charge of the Kayole Junction people. As for the Embakasi Route, we do not have a good team yet, although we have so many nganya drivers there. We have Driver Sule, who will play number 7, and other drivers such as Kichele. I will play number 11, so do not underestimate me either,” Lenny said.
The driver maintained that preparations were already in place and that the match would go ahead on November 8, despite the organisers having considered staging it earlier.
He explained that they had decided to give drivers time to complete previously booked road trips before turning their attention to the football contest. One of the trips he mentioned involved Driver G.
“All the plans are ready, and that match will be crazy. The match is on November 8 this coming month. We could have held it this weekend, but we thought it was important to first clear all the booked road trips. We have one scheduled for Driver G., but after all that, the match must happen because Junction Route thinks we are weak,” he added.
Embakasi, commonly identified as Route 33, is one of the prominent corridors in Nairobi’s matatu industry. The route serves the Eastlands side of the city and has a strong presence in the nganya scene, with its vehicles attracting attention through elaborate customisation, entertainment features and distinctive designs.
Among the popular matatus associated with Embakasi is Syndicate, a high-profile nganya that attracted attention during its launch, which featured a ceremonial water salute. The vehicle is among the rides frequently associated with the route’s customised fleet.
Another recognisable name is Hastings, a long-standing Embakasi nganya associated with the Pride of Embakasi crew. The vehicle is known among enthusiasts for its executive-style interior, including premium seating and an elaborate audio setup.
Bapesta is another vehicle associated with the route. It has attracted attention for its streetwear-inspired graphics, distinctive exterior styling and customised interior finish.
The Embakasi corridor also has a reputation for offering different styles of matatu entertainment. Some of its nganyas feature custom number plates, individual bucket seats and entertainment systems, while live DJs and music form part of the experience for passengers and enthusiasts.
Route 33 also operates across major roads connecting Nairobi’s central business district to Eastlands, including Mombasa Road, Jogoo Road and Outering Road. This gives it a wide operational presence and a sizeable pool of drivers who could potentially be recruited into the football team.
Lenny’s mention of Driver Sule, Kichele and other drivers indicates that the route has several potential players to choose from, although he acknowledged that the team had not yet been properly assembled.
On the other side is Kayole Junction’s Route 39, a route with a strong following among Nairobi’s nganya enthusiasts and a reputation for energetic street displays, customised vehicles and dance culture.
One of its prominent matatus is 1977 Light House, which operates under the KC Shuttle banner and is associated with the Junction route. The vehicle has become a familiar name among enthusiasts because of its striking lighting arrangements, customised bodywork and high-energy presentation.
Sneaker Heads is another recognised nganya associated with Route 39. Its styling draws heavily on sneaker culture, with elaborate graphics and street-inspired artwork making it stand out among the route’s vehicles.
The route has also attracted attention with newer builds such as Nasa Junction, which is built on an Isuzu 33 chassis and features modern bodywork and customised graphics.
Beyond the vehicles themselves, Junction’s identity is closely tied to its crews and roadside celebrations. The unveiling of customised matatus can attract large crowds, with supporters gathering to dance, chant and celebrate the vehicles as they make their appearances.
The route is also associated with the popular Penguin dance move, a style of quick-footed choreography performed by conductors, drivers and hype men. The dance has circulated widely on social media, helping extend Junction’s influence beyond its regular passengers.
