For The Sake Of His Integrity Mahama Owes Akufo Addo An Unqualified Apology On The Honorary Award
Third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to offer an unqualified apology to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over the issue of honorary awards.Nana Akomea’s Facebook post reported by Modern Ghana, GhanaWeb and MyJoyOnline (29–31 October 2026).
In a social media post on 29 October 2026, Akomea said Mahama’s recent acceptance of an honorary doctorate from a Russian university contradicted the strong criticism he levelled against Akufo-Addo while in opposition.
He recalled that Mahama had described it as inappropriate for a sitting president to receive honorary doctorates. At the time, Mahama argued that such honours should wait until after a president left office so that a proper assessment of his record could be made.
I was happy for my good friend President Mahama, but sad at the same time,” Akomea wrote. “President Akufo-Addo got some honorary awards in his time as President. I remember John Mahama’s cruel commentary and criticism.
Akomea noted that Mahama has received three or four honorary doctorates since returning to office less than two years ago, including the latest one from Russia. He described the turnaround as a matter of integrity.
“For the sake of his integrity, President Mahama owes President Akufo-Addo an unqualified apology on this matter of honorary awards,” he stated.
The comments follow Mahama’s receipt of an honorary doctorate from the Russian University of Transport during a visit linked to the Russia-Africa Summit. The award recognised his contributions to transport and logistics development.
The NPP vice chairman’s remarks have added to ongoing political debate about consistency in public positions taken by leaders when in government and in opposition.
