Duduzile Zuma Spotted at EFF’s Tshela Thupa Rally in Soweto Ahead of Local Government Elections

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla has attracted attention after being spotted at the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) highly anticipated Tshela Thupa Rally in Soweto, adding an interesting political dimension to the party’s final campaign activities ahead of the Local Government Elections.

The daughter of former president Jacob Zuma was among those seen attending the massive political gathering at Orlando Amstel Arena, popularly known as Orlando Stadium. Her presence has sparked conversations about political relationships and possible alignments as political parties intensify their efforts to secure votes.

The Tshela Thupa Rally, traditionally regarded as the EFF’s biggest campaign event before an election, was branded by the red berets as the “Mother of All Rallies”. Thousands of supporters dressed in their trademark red outfits filled the stadium, creating an energetic atmosphere as the party prepared for its final election message.

EFF Commander-in-Chief Julius Malema was expected to address supporters, deliver the party’s final line of march and encourage volunteers to mobilise voters across different municipalities.

Zuma-Sambudla’s appearance is particularly interesting given the changing political landscape in South Africa. Her father leads the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), which has emerged as a major political force and previously attracted voters who traditionally supported the EFF.

The relationship between the political formations has therefore attracted considerable attention, especially as parties compete for influence among communities that have become increasingly dissatisfied with traditional political leadership.

For the EFF, the local government elections represent an important opportunity to strengthen its position in municipalities and defend its support base. The party has been campaigning on promises to eliminate municipal tender systems, insource general workers and expand access to free basic services for qualifying grant beneficiaries.

These promises form part of its broader argument that municipalities should prioritise ordinary residents rather than political connections and private interests.

The rally also comes at a crucial moment, with political parties making their final appeals to undecided voters before polling begins.

Although Zuma-Sambudla’s attendance does not automatically indicate a formal political alliance or change in party allegiance, her presence at such a significant EFF event is likely to generate discussion.

With the elections approaching, every appearance by prominent political figures is attracting attention as South Africa’s political landscape continues to evolve.
