Chances not taken – calls not given – Fernando da Cruz analyses Kaizer Chiefs’ derby defeat

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz has offered a detailed assessment of his side’s 2–1 Soweto Derby loss to Orlando Pirates, pointing to three decisive factors that shaped the outcome at FNB Stadium. While acknowledging the disappointment, he insisted there were positive signs alongside the painful lessons.

The French tactician highlighted wasted opportunities as the first major turning point. “We created several clear chances early on — chances that should have put us in control,” he explained. “When you don’t take those moments against a rival like Pirates, you give them the belief they need to stay in the game.”

Secondly, da Cruz questioned the validity of Yanela Mbuthuma’s opening goal, describing it as “questionable” and saying his team’s confidence was affected by the decision to allow it to stand. Pule Mmodi equalised before half-time to restore hope, but the momentum had shifted.

Finally, he singled out inexperience as the defining factor in the closing stages. “In the last 20 minutes, you could see the difference in composure,” he said. “Our young players showed great spirit, but they lacked the experience to manage the tension and keep possession when it mattered most.” Tshepang Moremi struck the winner in that decisive final quarter.

Da Cruz remains committed to the rebuilding process, noting: “These boys are learning — and derby matches are the hardest classroom of all. We will be stronger next time.”
