Cash-In-Transit Robbers With AK-47 Rifle Killed After Gunmen Open Fire On Police Officer
A suspected cash-in-transit robber has been shot dead following a dramatic gun battle with police and private security units in Jeppestown, Johannesburg, after an intelligence-driven operation uncovered an alleged planned cash-in-transit robbery.
The deadly confrontation unfolded on Friday, 30 October 2026, at approximately 09:45, after a multidisciplinary law enforcement team received information about suspects allegedly preparing to carry out a cash-in-transit heist.
According to Gauteng police, the operation involved the South African Police Service (SAPS) Tactical Response Team (TRT), Gauteng Traffic Airwing, CAP Specialised Unit, Tracker Connect and the SAPS Investigation of Violence and Organised Crime.
Acting on the intelligence, the team tracked a white Suzuki Ertiga travelling along the N3 highway in the direction of George Goch Hostel.
However, what began as a surveillance operation quickly turned into a violent confrontation when the suspects allegedly opened fire on the pursuing law enforcement officers.
During the confrontation, the suspects abandoned their vehicle outside Jeppe Train Station and attempted to escape on foot.
One of the suspects allegedly continued firing at police officers using an AK-47 assault rifle, prompting a further exchange of gunfire.
The situation remains tense as two other suspects managed to escape on foot and are still being sought by law enforcement authorities.
A manhunt has since been launched to track down the outstanding suspects, whose identities have not yet been released.
The intensity of the gun battle was evident from the damage sustained by two law enforcement vehicles, which were struck by bullets during the confrontation.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) attended the scene following the fatal shooting, as required in cases involving deaths during police operations.
Gauteng police are investigating cases of attempted murder murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Investigations are continuing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the suspected robbery plot and locate the two outstanding suspects.
