Calls Grow for Minister Cachalia to Leave General Mkhwanazi on the Police Frontline

Questions have been raised over the reported plans involving KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, with concerns being expressed about his operational role and the future leadership structure within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

In a strongly worded public message directed at Acting Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia, a critic questioned why there appeared to be efforts to move Mkhwanazi away from frontline policing and into an office-based administrative position.

The message argued that Mkhwanazi had made his priorities clear, emphasising that his focus was on confronting criminals through direct police operations rather than spending most of his time attending boardroom meetings and managing dockets from an office.

It further questioned the reasons behind any proposed changes to the general’s responsibilities, asking why an experienced operational commander would potentially be removed from the frontline while crime-fighting remains a major concern across the country.

Another issue raised was the possible impact of such changes on the future leadership succession within SAPS. The critic suggested that Mkhwanazi could eventually be considered as a successor to National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola when he retires.

The message warned that disrupting the existing leadership pathway could raise further questions about the direction of the police service and the importance placed on operational experience when selecting future senior commanders.

It also stressed that South Africa needs police leaders who remain connected to operations on the ground, where officers confront criminal networks and respond to serious crimes.

However, the concerns represent the views expressed in the public message, and do not independently establish the minister’s intentions or confirm that a succession arrangement has been decided.

The intervention has brought renewed attention to Mkhwanazi’s position within SAPS, the minister’s authority over police leadership structures and the broader debate about balancing operational policing with administrative responsibilities.
