7 Things That Can Happen When You Mix Certain Household Cleaning Products

Many people mix cleaning products because they believe combining them will make their homes cleaner. Unfortunately, some combinations can release dangerous gases or cause chemical reactions that harm the eyes, skin and lungs.

1. Bleach and ammonia Mixing bleach with ammonia-containing products can release toxic chloramine gases. These fumes can cause coughing, chest tightness, breathing difficulties and eye irritation.

2. Bleach and vinegar Combining bleach with vinegar can release chlorine gas. This gas can seriously irritate the lungs and may cause dangerous breathing problems.

3. Bleach and toilet cleaners Some toilet cleaners contain acids. Mixing them with bleach can release chlorine gas, making this a particularly dangerous combination.

4. Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar Mixing these substances together in the same container can form peracetic acid, which can irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory system.

5. Different drain cleaners Some drain cleaners contain strong chemicals that can react dangerously when mixed. The reaction may release heat, cause splashing or produce hazardous fumes.

6. Bleach and rubbing alcohol Mixing bleach with rubbing alcohol can produce harmful chemical compounds, including chloroform under certain conditions. Never combine these products.

7. Multiple cleaning products in a small bathroom Even when products are not directly mixed, using several strong cleaners in a poorly ventilated room can expose people to irritating fumes.

Final thoughts Never mix cleaning products unless the manufacturer specifically says the combination is safe. Use one product at a time, follow the label and ventilate the room. If you accidentally mix products and develop coughing, dizziness or breathing difficulty, leave the area immediately and seek emergency medical advice. Do not try to neutralise the mixture with another chemical.
