“11 points behind but still believing” – Da Cruz on why Kaizer Chiefs’ title race is far from over
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has insisted his side is far from out of the Betway Premiership title race, even though they trail leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by 12 points with the season still in its relatively early stages. Speaking after the Soweto Derby defeat, Da Cruz acknowledged the challenge has grown — but pointed to 21 remaining fixtures as proof there is still plenty of time to close the distance.
“It is more difficult today after this game,” the French tactician admitted. “But the PSL is a long journey. When we recover our injured players — and we have been unlucky since the start of the season — we will have more consistency.”
Da Cruz believes numerous dropped points from draws tell the story of their campaign so far. “We deserved to win those games, but because of our lack of experience, we didn’t convert them into victories.” He is confident that a fully fit squad will help turn those promising performances into three-pointers, and that a sustained winning run can rapidly reshape the table.
“At some point we must build a positive dynamic with a few wins in a row to keep this journey going,” he said. “We must keep a positive mindset.” Orlando Pirates currently sit just one point behind Sundowns at the summit, but Da Cruz is refusing to write off Amakhosi’s chances — provided they can stay healthy, gain experience, and start turning draws into wins.
