Yvonne Okwara’s New Workplace Unveiled: Inside Shuga Global’s London Office and Mission
Yvonne Okwara is moving into a different professional environment after spending years informing Kenyans through television journalism. Her latest appointment has also drawn attention to an organisation whose work revolves around young people and social development.
The former Citizen TV journalist has joined Shuga Global as its Head of Investments and Partnerships. The organisation announced the appointment on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, shortly after Okwara’s departure from the Royal Media Services owned station.
Her new responsibilities will centre on developing relationships with potential partners, attracting investment and securing resources to support the organisation’s programmes. The position also places her in a role where communication, business knowledge and the ability to engage different stakeholders will be important.
Shuga Global is an international non profit organisation that uses entertainment, storytelling and community programmes to address challenges affecting young people.
One of its best known projects is the Shuga television drama, which first premiered in Kenya in 2009. The production used fictional characters and relatable situations to encourage conversations about relationships, HIV prevention and sexual health.
The programme later reached audiences beyond Kenya, helping the organisation establish a presence in different communities.
Beyond television productions, Shuga Global works with young people through media initiatives and partnerships aimed at promoting informed decision making. Its areas of interest include health awareness, gender equality and other social issues affecting younger generations.
The organisation was previously known as the MTV Staying Alive Foundation before adopting its current identity in April 2026.
Okwara’s appointment comes as the organisation seeks to strengthen its partnerships and explore additional sources of funding to support its activities.
Her experience in the media industry gives her a background in public communication and engagement with influential people across different sectors.
The appointment follows her final appearance on Citizen TV on October 27, when she brought an end to her eight year stint at the station. Her departure marked a major change for viewers who had become familiar with her presentation of major news and current affairs programmes.
She now begins a different assignment, moving from reporting on issues affecting society to working with an organisation that seeks to address some of those challenges.
