Today’s Headlines: Tinubu Has Failed to Tackle Insecurity — ADC; Obasanjo criticises Tinubu’s borrowings, says debt could destroy generations of Nigerians
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chief Niyi Aborisade, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of failing to address hunger, insecurity and unemployment in Nigeria.
Aborisade said the economic hardship confronting Nigerians, coupled with persistent security challenges, had raised questions about the effectiveness of the policies of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.
It would be recalled that Tinubu had blamed the opposition for hunger and hardship in the country.
In an interview with The Guardian in Ibadan, the human rights lawyer argued that unemployment, particularly among young people, contributed to rising criminal activities, insisting that the government needed to do more to create jobs and improve citizens’ living conditions.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticised the Bola Tinubu administration’s continued pursuit of domestic and external loans to finance the national budget and execute projects across various sectors, warning that excessive borrowing could destroy future generations.
Mr Obasanjo, who democratically governed Nigeria between 1999 and 2007, argued that the country’s continued borrowing and reliance on foreign institutions, particularly the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), might not address its economic challenges, insisting that the institutions were not established to solve Nigeria’s problems.
The former president spoke on Friday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, at the Ajibosin Platform, a public forum themed “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence to Solve Grassroots Problems and Accelerate National Development.”
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has identified two suspected cases of Ebola disease in Nigeria’s North-East, raising fresh concerns as the country continues to strengthen its response to the outbreak of the deadly virus.
The agency disclosed this on Saturday in an update shared on its official social media platforms, stating that both individuals had been isolated while contact identification, listing and laboratory investigations were ongoing.
The NCDC, however, cautioned that the two individuals had not been confirmed to have Ebola, stressing that their infection status would be determined by laboratory results.
The development comes less than two weeks after Nigeria confirmed its first case of Ebola disease in the current outbreak, involving the Bundibugyo strain of the virus.
On October 20, the World Health Organisation (WHO) confirmed that a 42-year-old woman who travelled from Uganda through Addis Ababa to Abuja had tested positive for the virus.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, has said the commission under his watch has no plan to shift the 2027 general elections.
He said the poll had been fixed and preparations were in top gear, hence the commission would not alter the timetable and insisted that the elections must hold as scheduled.
Amupitan stated this during the commission’s interactive meeting with staff members in the six states of the South-South geopolitical zone and an assessment of their readiness for the 2027 general elections, held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Saturday.
This comes amid claims by some political parties that INEC plans to postpone the general elections.
