The Buccaneers gave their fans plenty to cheer about as the two Soweto giants served up a fiery battle packed with goalmouth action, missed chances and late drama.

Both sides came out firing, desperate to get one over their biggest rivals.

Pirates looked dangerous early on, with youngster Simphiwe Masilela coming close in the third minute. But his effort sailed wide.

Chiefs hit back, and Wandile Duba should have done better in the 12th minute when he missed a golden chance to put Amakhosi ahead.

Pule Mmodi also threatened in the 16th minute, while Pirates defender Lebone Seema failed to bury a free header from a set-piece two minutes later.

But it was the Buccaneers who struck first.

Chiefs kept pushing for a second goal, with youngster Mfundo Vilakazi showing plenty of attacking intent.

The talented midfielder came close in the 41st minute but couldn’t find the back of the net.

After the break, Pirates came out with fresh energy and grabbed the lead again in the 55th minute.

Tshepang Moremi finished off a brilliant pass from Thapelo Mokobodi to put the Buccaneers 2-1 ahead, sending their supporters into another frenzy.

The match stayed wide open, with both teams hunting for another breakthrough.

Moremi had a chance to put the result beyond doubt in the 85th minute, but fired wide.

Evidence Makgopa also missed a golden opportunity two minutes later when he failed to hit the target.

There was more drama in the dying minutes when Inácio Miguel was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

Despite the late pressure, Pirates held on to seal a memorable 2-1 win and bragging rights in the biggest fixture on the South African football calendar.
