Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged women in the South-East to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, declaring that the country has passed through the most difficult phase of his administration’s economic reforms.
She made the appeal on Saturday at the South-East Zonal APC Women Presidential Rally in Enugu, where women from across the region declared support for the President’s second-term ambition.
Using childbirth as an analogy for the country’s economic situation, the First Lady said the difficult period associated with the ongoing reforms was giving way to prosperity.
“As the President said, it is time for prosperity. You know, the pain of labour to birth a child is over. It is time for joy and prosperity,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu expressed confidence that the President would remain committed to transforming Nigeria, describing the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a party that keeps its promises.
She urged women across the region to rally behind the administration, saying Nigeria was approaching a period of economic prosperity after enduring the challenges of reform.
The First Lady also highlighted the interventions of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), which she said had supported women, young people and vulnerable groups through financial assistance, skills acquisition programmes and the provision of equipment.
She assured beneficiaries that the empowerment programmes would continue.
As part of the rally, Mrs Tinubu flagged off the distribution of empowerment items to 5,000 women in Enugu State.
The event was attended by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah; Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru; the Governor of Imo State; Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu; and other APC leaders and stakeholders from across the South-East.
Also present were the wife of the Senate President, the wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the APC National Woman Leader and the Minister of Women Affairs.
Earlier, the First Lady and other women leaders accompanying her visited the Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, led by its chairman, Igwe Samuel Asadu.
Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, Asadu expressed satisfaction with the achievements of the Tinubu administration and pledged their support.
The traditional rulers also commended the First Lady for her interventions aimed at improving the welfare of women, young people and children through the Renewed Hope Initiative.
