Soweto Derby: Pirates and Chiefs Unveil Starting Line-Ups for Sold-Out FNB Stadium Clash

Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed their starting line-ups for the first Soweto Derby of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, with both teams preparing for a fiercely contested encounter at a sold-out FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The highly anticipated fixture brings together two of South African football’s biggest rivals, with pride, bragging rights and crucial league points at stake. Both coaches have selected strong sides as they look to secure a positive result in one of the most significant matches on the domestic football calendar.

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has named Sipho Chaine in goal, with captain Nkosinathi Sibisi leading the defensive department. The Buccaneers’ backline also features Lebone Seema, Nkosikhona Ndaba and Deon Hotto.

In midfield, Thalente Mbatha, Thapelo Mokobodi and Sihle Selepe have been selected to provide the balance and energy needed to compete against their rivals. The attacking responsibility falls to Simphiwe Masilela, Tshepang Moremi and Yanela Mbuthuma, who will be expected to trouble the Chiefs defence.

One notable feature of the Pirates selection is the inclusion of Mbuthuma as the central attacking option, while Moremi and Masilela offer additional attacking movement.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz has also settled on his starting XI, with Brandon Petersen captaining the team from between the posts.

Amakhosi have opted for a defensive combination featuring Paseka Mako, Inacio Miguel, Thabo Moloisane and Reeve Frosler. Miguel’s return to the starting line-up is particularly noteworthy, with the defender coming in for Rushwin Dortley.

Sibongiseni Mthethwa will provide the defensive cover in midfield, supported by Lebohang Maboe and Mduduzi Shabalala. In the attacking department, Pule Mmodi, Mfundo Vilakazi and Wandile Duba have been selected to lead the challenge against Pirates.

Duba will attract considerable attention following his impressive midweek hat-trick against TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup. The striker will be hoping to carry that confidence into the derby and make another important contribution for the Glamour Boys.

Both teams arrive at the fixture following convincing 3-0 victories in the Carling Knockout Cup. Pirates defeated Milford FC, while Chiefs overcame TS Galaxy, giving both sides an encouraging boost ahead of their meeting.

The match also represents the 186th official chapter in the historic rivalry. According to Kaizer Chiefs, Amakhosi have recorded 75 victories, compared with 50 wins for Pirates, while 55 encounters have ended in draws.

Pirates will be eager to continue their impressive run in the league and strengthen their position near the top of the standings. Chiefs, meanwhile, will see the derby as an opportunity to make a major statement and close the gap on their rivals.

With the stadium sold out and supporters eagerly anticipating the action, the stage is set for another memorable Soweto Derby. The confirmed line-ups have now been revealed, and attention turns to the players tasked with delivering when it matters most.
