Nsawam and Suhum Chiefs Join Forces Against KOANS Over Alleged Takeover of Ancestral Lands

A major land dispute is attracting attention in Ghana’s Eastern Region after traditional leaders from communities between Nsawam and Suhum joined forces to challenge what they describe as the alleged forceful takeover of their ancestral lands by KOANS Building Solutions.

The chiefs recently announced their decision to unite during a media engagement at the Ofori Panin Fie in Kyebi on Thursday, October 29, 2026. They explained that their decision was aimed at protecting their traditional lands and preventing further disputes involving the affected communities.

According to the traditional leaders, KOANS Building Solutions has allegedly acquired and registered large portions of land in its own name without the knowledge or consent of the affected chiefs and the Okyenhene, the paramount chief of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area.

The chiefs also accused the company of allegedly using land guards and state security personnel to intimidate residents as part of efforts to take control of the disputed areas.

They expressed concern that the situation goes beyond ordinary land ownership disagreements because entire communities could be affected by the alleged acquisitions.

For the traditional authorities, the land represents more than just property. It carries historical, cultural and economic importance because their ancestors occupied and protected these territories for generations.

The chiefs believe that allowing the alleged activities to continue could threaten the livelihoods of residents, particularly farmers who depend on the land for their daily survival.

By forming a united front, the traditional leaders hope to strengthen their position and use appropriate legal and traditional channels to address their concerns.

The development has renewed conversations about land ownership, customary rights and the growing challenges surrounding property disputes in Ghana.

However, the allegations remain contested, and KOANS Building Solutions’ response to the latest accusations was not included in the reports reviewed.
