Mike Makaab Explains The Transfer Struggle Facing South Africa’s Top Scorers
Scoring goals consistently does not always guarantee a move to a bigger club, and South African football agent Mike Makaab has offered an explanation for why some of the Premier Soccer League’s most prolific forwards struggle to secure career-changing transfers.
The issue has attracted fresh attention following AmaZulu striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya’s remarkable start to the 2026/27 campaign. The forward has scored 10 goals in his first 10 appearances across all competitions, putting his early-season performances firmly in the spotlight.
Ngwenya’s form also brings back a familiar question about the careers of several PSL goal-scorers who have produced impressive numbers without immediately moving to bigger teams or securing opportunities abroad.
Junior Dion is one example. The Golden Arrows forward finished last season as the Betway Premiership’s leading scorer with 14 goals, but has yet to complete a move to a bigger club despite reported interest.
Other forwards who have encountered similar challenges include Mwape Musonda, Rodney Ramagalela, Katlego Mashego and Tshegofatso Mabasa. Mabasa eventually moved to Moroccan side MAS Fes at a time when he was not a regular in his previous team.
Makaab, who represents Ngwenya, believes the situation cannot be explained by a general problem with how South African strikers are evaluated. Speaking to KickOff, he said every transfer has its own circumstances, while noting that goalscorers remain highly sought after across the world.
He explained that negotiations typically involve three parties with different expectations: the club hoping to sign the player, the team seeking to sell him and the footballer looking for an opportunity that will advance his career.
Those differences can make an agreement difficult, particularly when a player attracts strong interest from other clubs.
According to Makaab, the process requires patience, perseverance and understanding from everyone involved. He also stressed that timing plays a major role in determining whether a transfer eventually happens.
His comments suggest that a striker’s scoring record is only one part of the transfer equation. The financial expectations of clubs, the player’s ambitions and the timing of negotiations can all influence whether a promising move becomes reality.
