Mbalula Defends Government Over Potholes, Blames Heavy Rains And Climate Change
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has defended the government amid growing concerns over the condition of roads and the increasing number of potholes across South Africa, pointing to the impact of climate change and heavy rainfall.
Mbalula argued that potholes are partly caused by changing weather conditions, explaining that persistent rainfall washes away road surfaces and contributes to the deterioration of streets.
“Potholes will be there because we live in the situation of climate change. There are rains, water, and the streets get washed out,” Mbalula said.
However, the ANC Secretary-General stressed that the issue should not simply be about acknowledging the existence of potholes but about what government intends to do to address the problem.
He emphasised that government must take practical steps to assist communities and ensure that damaged roads are repaired.
“We are not talking about something that you know is falling from the sky. We are talking about what government is going to do to help,” he added.
His remarks come amid persistent public frustration over deteriorating road infrastructure, with motorists and residents frequently raising concerns about damaged roads, vehicle repairs, road safety and the slow pace of municipal maintenance.
While heavy rainfall can contribute to road damage, Mbalula’s comments place renewed attention on government’s responsibility to maintain infrastructure and respond effectively to residents’ complaints.
The central question now is whether government will translate its promises into visible action by repairing damaged roads and improving drainage systems to prevent recurring problems.
For many South Africans, the expectation is straightforward: explanations are not enough; communities want safer and properly maintained roads.
