“Mahama Government Is Taking Over Local Mines and Giving Them to Chinese” – Kofi Bentil Raises Alarm
According to a report by TV3 Ghana on Saturday, October 31, 2026, private legal practitioner Kofi Bentil has accused the Mahama government of taking over locally owned mining concessions and handing them to Chinese operators. He made the allegation while speaking on TV3’s Key Points programme, where he expressed concern about the reported developments at Narawa Mines.
Kofi Bentil criticised the alleged takeover, arguing that the actions of some individuals at the mining site raise serious concerns about the protection of local businesses and the rule of law in Ghana.
He stated that armed individuals had allegedly attacked people at the mining site, taken control of the concession and handed mining operations to Chinese nationals. He also questioned why the Minerals Commission had allowed such developments to occur under a democratic government.
Another private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, also raised concerns about the situation. He alleged that some state officials were intimidating and brutalising the owners of Narawa Mines despite an existing court order restraining the government from taking over the concession.
Meanwhile, Narawa Company Limited has called on the government and relevant security agencies to investigate what it describes as a violent takeover of its mining concession.
The company claims that the incidents have resulted in three deaths and injuries to 10 people between August 12 and October 7, 2026. It also alleges that excavators, gold and industrial equipment worth millions of cedis and dollars have been stolen or destroyed.
Narawa further claims that several mining operators, including some Chinese nationals, are currently operating at the concession without proper authorisation.
The company has called on the Minerals Commission, the Ghana Armed Forces, the police and other relevant institutions to investigate the allegations, clarify the authority behind the occupation and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
However, the allegations surrounding the takeover, violence and mining activities remain subject to investigations and legal determination.
