Letsholonyane Backs Kaizer Chiefs to Improve This Season
Reneilwe Letsholonyane Backs Kaizer Chiefs to Challenge for Silverware
Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane believes Amakhosi have the quality to compete for major honours this season, but insists that the players must take responsibility for turning the club’s fortunes around.
The former Bafana Bafana international, popularly known as Yeye, has shared his assessment of his former club following an inconsistent start to the campaign. Despite the challenges facing the Soweto giants, Letsholonyane remains convinced that the team has the potential to compete with South Africa’s leading clubs.
However, he believes that having talented players is not enough to guarantee success. The squad must demonstrate greater commitment, consistency and determination when it matters most.
Speaking to iDiski Times, Letsholonyane reflected on the positive signs he noticed when the new campaign began, suggesting that Chiefs initially showed improvements in their organisation and overall approach to matches.
“When the league started, I remember saying that this was the most organised Chiefs that I’ve seen in a very long time,” Letsholonyane said.
He explained that the team appeared to understand how it wanted to defend, attack and approach games, giving supporters reasons to believe that the club was moving in the right direction.
Nevertheless, football results have not always reflected that early promise. Injuries, changing combinations and disappointing results have contributed to a difficult period for the Glamour Boys, increasing the pressure on the technical team and the playing squad.
Chiefs’ elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup against Zambian side Red Arrows also added to the frustration among supporters, who are eager to see their club return to consistent success.
Despite these setbacks, Letsholonyane does not believe that the coach should carry all the blame for the team’s struggles.
According to the former midfielder, the players must recognise their responsibility and work harder to deliver the results expected from a club of Chiefs’ stature.
“I don’t think it’s about the coach. Yes, the coach does the training, but in the end, the people that are playing are the players,” he explained.
He further stressed that the squad must put in greater effort, fight for results and demonstrate their desire to succeed whenever they take to the field.
His comments come at a crucial stage of the season, with Chiefs determined to improve their position in the Betway Premiership and remain competitive in domestic competitions.
The upcoming Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates also presents an opportunity for Amakhosi to demonstrate their progress in one of South African football’s biggest fixtures.
Letsholonyane believes that Chiefs should not be written off in the title conversation. He suggested that winning their next two matches could significantly change the narrative surrounding the club’s ambitions.
Ultimately, the former Amakhosi star believes the quality is there. The challenge now is for the players to translate that potential into consistent performances, positive results and a genuine challenge for silverware.
