Kaizer Chiefs Receive Encouraging News Ahead of Pirates Encounter

Rushwin Dortley Speaks on Facing Orlando Pirates After Long Injury Layoff

Kaizer Chiefs defender Rushwin Dortley is relishing the opportunity to feature in the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates after finally returning to competitive football following an exhausting 18-month injury absence.

The 24-year-old centre-back made his long-awaited comeback on Tuesday night when Amakhosi defeated TS Galaxy 3-0 in the Carling Knockout Cup Round of 16 at FNB Stadium. His return comes at an important moment for the Soweto giants, who are preparing for Saturday’s Betway Premiership encounter against their biggest rivals.

Dortley had been sidelined since March 2025 after suffering a serious knee injury that required surgery and an extended rehabilitation programme. His absence was a significant setback for Chiefs, particularly because he had established himself as a promising defender before the injury interrupted his progress.

The lengthy recovery period demanded considerable patience and determination from the young footballer. Being unable to help his teammates on the pitch for such an extended period presented both physical and mental challenges, but Dortley continued working towards his return.

Speaking ahead of the Soweto Derby, the defender expressed his happiness at being back in action and having another opportunity to represent the famous black and gold jersey.

He also admitted that returning just before one of South African football’s biggest fixtures made the occasion even more special.

Dortley described the experience of returning to the field as rewarding after everything he had endured during his rehabilitation. He explained that being able to contribute to the team’s efforts again was an important personal achievement.

The defender also made it clear that he enjoys playing in high-pressure encounters, recognising the special atmosphere and importance associated with the Soweto Derby.

His return could prove valuable for head coach Fernando Da Cruz, who has been looking for stability and consistency in the defensive department. Dortley’s ability to read the game, distribute the ball from the back and compete in aerial duels gives Chiefs another option as they prepare to face Pirates’ dangerous attacking players.

His performance against TS Galaxy offered encouraging signs. Dortley helped Chiefs secure a clean sheet while demonstrating composure after such a lengthy absence from competitive football.

The victory also provided Amakhosi with a confidence boost ahead of the derby, particularly after their recent struggles to produce consistent results.

Dortley acknowledged the positive atmosphere within the squad following the win and stressed the importance of carrying that confidence into the upcoming encounter. He believes the players must follow the coach’s instructions and perform to the best of their abilities.

However, his availability does not automatically guarantee a place in the starting lineup. The technical team must consider his fitness, match readiness and the demands of facing an in-form Pirates side.

For Chiefs, the defender’s return is nevertheless an encouraging development ahead of a fixture that could have significant implications for their league campaign.

After spending 18 months fighting his way back, Dortley now has an opportunity to make another important contribution to Amakhosi. If selected, the Soweto Derby could provide a memorable stage for the defender to demonstrate how far he has progressed since his injury setback.
