Jomo Sono Weighs In on Pirates vs Chiefs Showdown
Jomo Sono Backs Orlando Pirates to Beat Kaizer Chiefs in Soweto Derby ‘The Writing Is on the Wall’
Orlando Pirates legend Jomo Sono has made a bold prediction ahead of Saturday’s highly anticipated Soweto Derby, backing the Buccaneers to overcome arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.
The two Soweto giants renew their historic rivalry on 31 October in a Betway Premiership encounter that has attracted enormous attention across South African football. With pride, bragging rights and valuable league points at stake, anticipation is building ahead of another chapter in one of the continent’s biggest football fixtures.
Sono, who holds legendary status at Orlando Pirates, believes the outcome is clear, pointing to the Buccaneers’ consistency as a major advantage over their rivals.
Speaking to KickOff, the former Bafana Bafana coach did not hesitate when asked about his prediction.
“Pirates are going to win, obviously. Chiefs look promising now, but the thing is Pirates has been consistent,” Sono said, as reported by Goal.
The former Pirates star believes the Buccaneers’ ability to maintain a high level of performance has placed them in a strong position heading into the derby.
Under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, Pirates have enjoyed an impressive start to their league campaign, combining attacking quality with consistency in their results. Their recent performances have strengthened their position among the leading contenders in the Betway Premiership.
Sono also praised the club’s approach to introducing young players into the senior team, suggesting that the careful integration of emerging talent has contributed to the team’s progress.
For the legendary football figure, that consistency could prove decisive against a Chiefs side still working to establish greater stability in its performances.
Despite backing Pirates, Sono acknowledged that Kaizer Chiefs will enter the contest with renewed confidence following their convincing 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy.
The result offered Amakhosi a timely boost ahead of the biggest fixture on the domestic football calendar. However, Sono questioned whether the scoreline fully reflected the balance of the contest before Chiefs took control.
He pointed out that the teams had been relatively even before a defensive setback affected TS Galaxy, allowing Chiefs to take advantage and extend their lead.
Sono’s assessment suggests that he is not dismissing Chiefs’ ability, but believes their recent victory should be considered in the context of the performance that produced it.
While Sono is confident in his prediction, the Soweto Derby has repeatedly demonstrated that reputation and recent form do not always determine the final result.
The intensity of the rivalry places enormous pressure on players, with both teams aware of the significance of victory to their supporters. Chiefs will be determined to use their recent cup success as motivation, while Pirates will want to maintain their strong league momentum.
The Buccaneers also have the opportunity to strengthen their position in the title race, making the encounter important beyond the traditional battle for bragging rights.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 15:30 at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October.
