Jomo Sono Shares His Prediction Ahead Of The Soweto Derby Between Orlando Pirates And Kaizer Chiefs
Bucs Legend Sono Says Derby Result Is āObviousā As He Makes Bold Prediction Against Kaizer Chiefs
Orlando Pirates legend Jomo Sono has added fuel to the excitement surrounding the Soweto Derby after making a confident prediction about the outcome of the highly anticipated clash against Kaizer Chiefs.
The two Soweto giants meet at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October 2026, in the 186th official meeting between the rivals. With millions of supporters following the occasion, Sono believes the current form of the Buccaneers gives them a clear advantage over their traditional rivals.
Speaking to KickOff, the former Pirates star did not hesitate when asked which team he expected to emerge victorious.
āPirates are going to win, obviously. Chiefs look promising now, but the thing is Pirates has been consistent,ā Sono said.
His prediction comes at a time when the Buccaneers have been enjoying an impressive run in the Betway Premiership, while Amakhosi are still searching for the consistency needed to turn promising performances into victories.
Sono believes Pirates’ consistency and their approach to developing young players could make the difference in such an important encounter.
The legendary football figure praised the Buccaneers for gradually introducing emerging talents into the senior team rather than placing unnecessary pressure on them.
He also acknowledged that Chiefs would enter the derby with confidence following their convincing 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Round of 16.
However, Sono questioned whether the scoreline accurately reflected how the match unfolded, suggesting that the contest had been more balanced before Galaxy lost defender Mlondi Mncwango.
āUntil iKhosi scored the first goal, their performance was the same as Galaxy’s. They were equal,ā he said.
He added that Galaxy lost its balance after Mncwango’s departure, allowing Chiefs to take control and score more goals.
Sono ultimately maintained that Pirates would have the upper hand, suggesting that the writing was on the wall for Amakhosi.
Pirates had collected 22 points from eight matches, recording seven victories and one draw. Their attacking performances and defensive organisation had established them as serious contenders in the title race.
Chiefs, meanwhile, had accumulated 14 points from the same number of matches, with three wins and five draws. Although Amakhosi remained unbeaten in the league, their inability to convert several draws into victories had attracted criticism.
Both teams also arrived after impressive Carling Knockout victories, with Pirates defeating Milford FC 3-0 and Chiefs beating TS Galaxy by the same scoreline.
Despite Sono’s confidence in Pirates, the Soweto Derby has repeatedly demonstrated that form and statistics do not always determine the final result.
Chiefs have an opportunity to challenge the expectations surrounding them and deliver a performance that could change the conversation about their progress under coach Fernando Da Cruz.
